Aloha

My name is Dawn Martin and I am a Licensed Mental Health Therapist. My passion is creating connection, teaching others, and facilitating change. I have worked in a variety of different behavioral health industries and bring with me experience working with youth, adults, non-profits, state & local agencies, and higher education. Through my teaching at the University of Hawai'i School of Social Work I see the need for authentic and integrative support for our growing community of therapists.

I look forward to meeting you!

MY SUPERVISION MODEL

Systems, Developmental, and Integrative

I employ a comprehensive and multifaceted approach to clinical supervision, drawing upon principles from systems theory, developmental psychology, and an integrated model. This model aims to enhance the professional growth, clinical skills, and overall effectiveness of the therapists under my supervision. Here is a brief summary of the key components of my clinical supervision model:

Systems Theory: Recognizing that therapists operate within complex systems, I emphasize a systemic perspective in supervision. This approach acknowledges the interconnectedness of various elements within the therapeutic process, including the therapist, client, organization, and larger societal factors. By exploring these interrelationships, I encourage therapists to consider the broader context of their work and how it impacts their clients and themselves.

Developmental Model: I adopt a developmental perspective in supervising clinicians, acknowledging that professional growth occurs over time and follows a predictable trajectory. I assess the developmental stage of each therapist and tailor supervision accordingly, providing appropriate support and challenges. I promote reflective practice, encouraging therapists to explore their values, beliefs, and biases to enhance self-awareness and foster personal and professional growth.

Integrated Model: In line with an integrated approach, I draw from multiple theoretical orientations, evidence-based practices, and therapeutic techniques. I support therapists in developing their own eclectic and integrated therapeutic style, allowing them to flexibly adapt their interventions to meet the unique needs of their clients. By promoting a spirit of openness and curiosity, I encourage therapists to integrate knowledge and skills from diverse sources.

Collaborative Learning: I foster a collaborative learning environment, where supervision is seen as a shared endeavor between supervisor and supervisee. I facilitate open and honest communication, actively listening to therapists' experiences, concerns, and insights. Through reflective discussions, case consultations, and experiential exercises, I cultivate a space for mutual learning, feedback, and exploration of ethical and clinical dilemmas.

Feedback and Evaluation: I provide regular and constructive feedback to clinicians, highlighting their strengths and areas for growth. This feedback is based on ongoing evaluation of their clinical performance, adherence to ethical guidelines, and professional development goals. I encourage therapists to engage in self-assessment and goal-setting, promoting a sense of accountability and continuous improvement.

Professional Support: Recognizing the challenges inherent in the therapeutic work, I prioritize the well-being and self-care of the therapists. I create a supportive and non-judgmental space where therapists can process their emotions, manage stress, and seek guidance when facing difficulties. I advocate for self-reflection, self-care practices, and access to resources that promote therapists' resilience and work-life balance.

By integrating systems theory, developmental perspectives, and an integrated model, my clinical supervision model aims to foster a comprehensive and adaptable approach to supervising clinicians. Through collaborative learning, reflective practice, and ongoing feedback, I strive to empower therapists in professional growth, enhance clinical effectiveness, and ultimately improve client outcomes.
